Family and Community Day (ACT) is celebrated in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) to encourage and acknowledge the importance of family life, community engagement, and social connections. This day primarily focuses on promoting strong family relationships, reinforcing the significance of quality time spent together, and encouraging community involvement. Several community organizations and local businesses collaborate to organize various family-friendly events and inclusive activities on this day to facilitate bonding among family members and foster interactive connections within the community.
Originally introduced as a replacement for a picnic day for the union members and their families, Family and Community Day (ACT) gained prominence in 2007 following a successful campaign led by the ACT government. The primary aim of this campaign was to recognize and appreciate the vitality of familial bonds and community support, as well as to create a balance between work and personal life for the residents of the ACT.
During Family and Community Day (ACT), a variety of engaging events and community programs are organized across the ACT. These events are designed to provide opportunities for families to enjoy recreational activities such as picnics, sports, games, and numerous entertainment options, catering to all age groups and interests. The observance promotes inclusivity in celebrations, making it accessible for all residents to participate. Family and Community Day (ACT) usually occurs on the first Monday of September or October, but since 2018, this holiday has been replaced by the Reconciliation Day, which is now observed on the last Monday in May.
Date shown for 2024 is estimated as the official date has not been finalized.
