Australian Citizenship Day is aimed at celebrating the role of citizenship in forming the fabric of our diverse nation. It serves as a reminder of the significance of our shared democratic values and the responsibilities and privileges that come with being an Australian citizen. The day aims to inspire pride in holding Australian citizenship while also promoting social cohesion, a sense of belonging and greater understanding of Australia's multicultural society.

The celebration was initially introduced in 2001 by the Australian Government on the recommendation of the National Citizenship Council, as part of the Australian Citizenship Affirmation Program. The date of September 17 was chosen to honour the anniversary of the renaming of the Nationality and Citizenship Act 1948 to the Australian Citizenship Act 1948, which ironically, did not take place until 1973. Citizenship Day provides an opportunity to reflect on our nation's history, the contributions of fellow citizens, and recognise those who have chosen to become a part of the Australian community through the citizenship process.

Australian Citizenship Day is typically marked by various community events, ceremonies and educational activities throughout the country. These events often include mass citizenship ceremonies organized by local governments, where new citizens are formally welcomed as fellow Australians, recite the Australian Citizenship Pledge and receive their citizenship certificates. Schools may also participate by organizing special lessons or assembly presentations to raise awareness of the importance of citizenship and the values that underpin Australian society. Australian Citizenship Day is observed annually on September 17th.
