The day aims to highlight the unique challenges faced by these women, such as limited access to resources and services, and encourages governments and international organisations to take firm actions in supporting rural women. The observance also emphasises the significance of gender equality and women's empowerment as vital factors in fostering sustainable development globally.
This special day was first established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007, in response to a call made by the participants at the Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing in 1995.
