Today, 39 years ago, on the feast of St. Bartholomew (which also fell on a Sunday), I attended for the first time a Mass celebrated by Rev. Fr. August Groß (TLM). Due to certain developments in the Jesuit order, he had separated from it. He died in 2002. Please pray for his soul.

St Bartholomew History
The Observance of Saint Bartholomew is a Christian tradition that commemorates the life and martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew, one of Jesus Christ's twelve apostles. The day is typically marked by religious gatherings, prayers, and reflection on the life and teachings of Saint Bartholomew. As an important figure in the early days of Christianity, it is an opportunity for believers to honour his contributions and sacrifices, and to seek spiritual guidance and inspiration from his example.
Saint Bartholomew, also known as Nathanael, is believed to have been born in Cana of Galilee, Israel, and was introduced to Jesus by the Apostle Philip. While specific historical details about his life are unclear, it is widely believed that he was martyred in Armenia by being flayed alive. In Canada, Saint Bartholomew is particularly significant to the Anglican Church, which has many parishes named in his honour. The major cathedral located in Montreal, Quebec, is called St. Bartholomew's Anglican Church.
In Canada, individuals and communities celebrate the Observance of Saint Bartholomew in various ways, with church services and gatherings playing a central role in commemorating the day. For instance, special prayers, sermons, and hymns are dedicated to the saint in services across the country. Additionally, the saint's feast day offers Christians in Canada an opportunity to deepen their faith and reflect on the meaning of spiritual sacrifice, martyrdom, and perseverance during difficult times. The Observance of Saint Bartholomew typically takes place on August 24th, but may vary slightly depending on each congregation's calendar and liturgical practices.
Saint Bartholomew facts
Bartholomew is simply just listed by name in the gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke as well as in Acts (Mt.10:2, Mark 3:14, Luke 6:12, Acts 1:13, 26). He is not mentioned in the Gospel of John, but some theologians believe that he is referred to by the name Nathaniel. Most of the information the church has about Bartholomew/Nathaniel is based on early sermons and writings.
Bartholomew is thought to have been martyred in Armenia. His skin was flayed from his body while he was still alive.
Saint Bartholomew is the patron saint of tanners, plasterers, tailors, leatherworkers, and cobblers. His intercession is invoked in Canada and around the world by those involved in these professions.
In Christian art, Saint Bartholomew is often depicted with a knife and his own flayed skin, which reflects the martyrdom he suffered.
