Saint Anthony History

Saint Anthony of Padua was born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1195. He was a Franciscan friar and Catholic priest known for his powerful preaching and remarkable theological knowledge. Anthony earned the moniker Hammer of the Heretics due to his persuasive speech against the heretical teachings. He was canonized by Pope Gregory IX less than a year after his death and was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1946. Saint Anthony is often depicted holding the Child Jesus, a book, or a lily, signifying his purity, wisdom, and deep connection to Jesus.

He is known as St. Anthony of Padua because of the famous sermons he gave in that Italian city shortly before his death in 1231. He was only 35-years-old when he died and was canonized less than one year afterward by Pope Gregory IX.
