National Pina Colada Day facts
Piña means pineapple and colada means strained in Spanish. Together the cocktail translates to strained pineapple, thus making pineapple juice an essential ingredient in the drink.
It is believed that the piña colada was created in 1954 by Ramón “Monchito” Marrero, a bartender at the Caribe Hilton’s Beachcomber Bar in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It’s said Marrero was asked to create a signature drink and that he took 3 months to come up with the recipe for the piña colada.
A traditional piña colada with rum, coconut cream, and pineapple juice can have as many as 650 calories.
One of the earliest stories of the Piña Colada dates back to the 19th century. Puerto Rican pirate Roberto Cofresí – to boost his crew's morale – gave them a beverage that contained pineapple, coconut and white rum. The recipe got lost after the death of Cofresi in 1825.
