Today is Merchant Navy Day. About 50,000 British merchant seamen were killed in World War 1 & 2 alone. Most have “no grave but the sea” & are commemorated on Tower Hill Memorial, London. 3 Sept 1939 was the date of the sinking of the first British merchant ship, the SS Athenia, built in Glasgow in 1923.
