Yom Hazikaron History

Yom HaZikaron (Israeli Memorial Day) seeks to remember those who gave their lives in defense of the State of Israel. This day serves as a national day of mourning. It honors those soldiers who fought in the War of Independence as well as subsequent battles. On the preceding day, a one-minute siren is sounded in the evening. The following morning, a two-minute siren is sounded before a national memorial ceremony is held.

Yom HaZikaron was established in 1963 by the Israelian parliament. It is observed annually near the 4th of lyar.

Yom HaZikaron begins with an official ceremony at the Western Wall, as the flag of Israel is lowered to half staff. Places of entertainment are closed for the day by law. Radio and television stations play programs about Israel's wars and show programming that conveys the somber mood of the day.
Israel’s national memorial flower is the Dam Hamaccabim flower (Hebrew: דם המכבים, Blood of the Maccabees)
