International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) is a day dedicated to raising awareness of Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGTB) rights violations while promoting interest in LGBT and human rights. As of 2015, same-sex sexual activity is illegal in 75 countries and in 5 of those countries, the punishment for same-sex sexual activity is the death penalty.
The founders of the International Day Against Homophobia established the IDAHO committee in order to co-ordinate international grass roots campaigns and push for official recognition of May 17. The date marks the anniversary of the decision to remove homosexuality from the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Diseases in 1990. The idea of a specific day was conceived in 2004, a year-long campaign involving thousands of individuals and organizations from all parts of the world succeeded in making the IDAHO initiative a reality. The founder of the day, Louis-Georges Tin was Chairperson from inception until 2013. In 2009, transphobia was added to the name of the campaign, it was the theme for that year, and in 2015 biphobia was added too.
